Our Impact: Nationally & Locally

Through its Laredo plant, Midwest supplies more than 40% of the surgical kits, approximately 80 million, used by hospitals to treat patients across the nation. Through our sterilization services, we help hospitals to provide a sterile clinical setting to serve patients. Studies have concluded that the average length of hospital stay for a patient with a healthcare-associated infection is 19 days longer than without such an infection. Effectively, sterilized medical devices help keep patients safe from infections in hospitals, so they can resume their lives as soon as possible.

We are proud of the difference we make behind the scenes in helping ensure a sterile clinical environment. We are also proud to make a difference in the greater Laredo community. Midwest has been a family-owned business since 1984 and a women-led company since 2015. Midwest provides 150 jobs, maintains a payroll of $4.8 million, and paid out more than $1.1 million to vendors and contractors in 2021. As a good neighbor, our people volunteer their time, while the company regularly supports local causes and charities including Habitat for Humanity, the Bethany House of Laredo, and the South Texas Food Bank.

EtO is the most reliable, scientifically proven, FDA-approved method to sterilize essential medical equipment needed for organ transplants, open-heart surgeries, and C-sections. For a certain class of medical devices, EtO is the only effective sterilization method performed that does not negatively impact the function and integrity of the device. While not all medical devices are sterilized with EtO, more than 20 billion devices sold in the U.S. annually are, approximately half of all devices requiring sterilization.

As a good neighbor, Midwest is committed to continuous improvement. As such, we have implemented new strategies to lower EtO output and have reduced emissions by 90% since 2019. Overall, our three EtO emissions streams have substantially been reduced.
